The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has formally turned over the results and data of its multi-year community solid waste management program to local leaders, marking a significant milestone in regional flood mitigation and waste reduction efforts.
The initiative spanned 202 barangays across 13 local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila, including Quezon City, Makati, Malabon, Pasig, Pasay, Mandaluyong, Taguig, Navotas, Parañaque, Pateros, Caloocan, San Juan and Manila.
During a close-out meeting with project partner Woodfields Consulting Inc., the agency transferred the program’s database and operational insights to participating municipalities to ensure long-term sustainability.
Key metrics from the five-year implementation highlighted a noticeable rise in household compliance with proper waste segregation and recycling practices. Most significantly, the program achieved a 58% reduction in the volume of garbage drifting into local waterways and drainage pumping stations, directly helping prevent urban flooding.
Following the turnover, the partner LGUs pledged to maintain momentum by sustaining and scaling up community-based waste management strategies in their respective jurisdictions.
