Senator Go Urges Government to Shelve Proposed Passport Price Increase Amid Economic Struggles

Senator Bong Go has voiced strong opposition to the proposed increase in passport fees, calling the price hike from P950 to P1,500 unacceptable and ill-timed given the country’s current economic struggles.

In a statement, Go highlighted that the increase comes at a time when Filipinos are already grappling with rising prices for oil, food and essential services triggered by tensions in the Middle East. He also cited recent data showing an uptick in unemployment rates as of July 2026, stressing that the government should avoid adding financial strain on everyday citizens, particularly Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

“Masakit na ang mapalayo sa kanilang mga mahal sa buhay—huwag naman sanang suklian ang kanilang sakripisyo ng halos dobleng bayarin sa kanilang passport,” Go said, emphasizing the sacrifices OFWs make for their families and the nation’s economy.

Go recalled that the validity of Philippine passports was extended from five to ten years specifically to lessen the recurring costs for Filipinos. He questioned the logic behind imposing nearly double the fee now, arguing that if costs are indeed rising, the government should consider subsidizing passport fees rather than passing the burden to the public.

Reiterating his core advocacy, Go urged government agencies to prioritize compassion over cost-recovery, concluding with a firm reminder, “ang kailangan ng mga Pilipino ngayon ay malasakit, hindi dagdag na pasakit. Serbisyo, hindi negosyo.”
