Wounded Soldier Honored for Bravery as Army Vows Sustained Offensive in Negros

A soldier wounded during an encounter with communist rebels in Negros Occidental has been awarded for gallantry, as the Philippine Army continues operations against remaining insurgent groups in the region.

Army chief Antonio Nafarrete conferred the Military Merit Medal during a hospital visit at Camp Gen. Macario Peralta Jr. in Jamindan, Capiz on May 1, recognizing the soldier’s actions during an April 19 operation in Barangay Salamanca, Toboso.

The soldier sustained gunshot wounds to both arms while participating in an intelligence-driven mission against armed group members. Despite his injuries, military officials said his actions helped protect civilians in the area during the firefight.

Another soldier wounded in a separate encounter in Calatrava, also in Negros Occidental, received the same award.

The recognition comes amid continued military operations across Negros Island, where authorities report the presence of remaining insurgent elements.

The 79th Infantry Battalion was also cited by the Toboso municipal government for its role in securing the area and managing the aftermath of recent clashes.

Military officials said the incidents underscore both the persistence of armed groups in the region and ongoing efforts to address security threats, with support for frontline troops continuing.
