DOE Begins Native Hydrogen Exploration in Pangasinan

The Department of Energy has launched a two-dimensional seismic survey in Bugallon, Pangasinan, to assess the Philippines’ potential native hydrogen resources.

The survey is being conducted under Service Contract No. 84 in partnership with the Municipality of Bugallon and Koloma, Inc.

It will map underground geological structures and identify formations that may contain native hydrogen. The data gathered will guide future exploration and resource evaluation activities.

The DOE said the initiative marks a significant step in determining whether native hydrogen can become a commercially viable indigenous energy source.

If viable deposits are confirmed, the resource could help diversify the country’s energy mix, support the clean energy transition and strengthen long-term energy security.

The department thanked the Provincial Government of Pangasinan, the Municipality of Bugallon and participating local government units for their cooperation and continued support for the exploration project.

The DOE said developing native hydrogen could also advance efforts to establish cleaner, more sustainable and domestically sourced energy resources.
