Parents Urged to Stay Alert After Student Found With Drug Paraphernalia, Knife in School

A call on parents to closely monitor their children’s activities was pushed following the discovery of drug paraphernalia and a knife in the possession of a Grade 7 student on the first day of classes last June 8.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that parental guidance remains the first line of defense in protecting children from illegal activities and other threats.

“It is important that parents stay involved and present when it comes to the activities of their children, and also be aware of the people they interact with,” he said.

The student reportedly told authorities she was holding the items for a cousin. She was later taken to the barangay hall and subsequently turned over to a reformation center for appropriate intervention. Nartatez said a thorough investigation has been ordered to hold accountable anyone involved in the incident.

The PNP highlighted the need for coordination between law enforcement, school authorities, and local government to reinforce safeguards and provide early intervention for at-risk youth. Police visibility in and around schools will be maintained to deter incidents and ensure immediate response to any security concerns.

“The PNP will continue to support programs and projects aimed at making every school a safe place for students and teachers,” Nartatez added, underlining the commitment to protecting learners and maintaining secure learning environments in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive.
