Tesla’s next-generation Roadster promises a futuristic twist on road travel

Forget beating traffic by changing lanes. What if your car could simply leave the road?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has brought that science-fiction fantasy a little closer to reality after unveiling a redesigned Tesla Roadster equipped with technology that allows it to briefly lift off the ground and perform aerial maneuvers.

Demonstrated at a SpaceX facility in Texas on October 15, the futuristic sports car showcased a spectacular combination of automotive engineering and aerospace technology, including cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX. The demonstration featured the vehicle lifting into the air and performing a midair maneuver before landing.

In other words, this is no ordinary sports car. It is the kind of vehicle that makes you wonder whether your next traffic jam might come with an emergency exit — straight up.

But before anyone starts planning a flying commute to work, there is a catch.

The demonstration showed brief airborne maneuvers, not a fully operational flying car capable of cruising above city traffic. The Roadster is still expected to enter production in 2028, and questions surrounding safety, regulations and practical everyday use remain unresolved.

The project is part of Musk’s long-running vision for a vehicle that pushes beyond the limits of conventional road transport. Tesla has also touted extraordinary performance claims, including acceleration from zero to 60 miles per hour in under one second. Those figures, however, should be treated as company claims rather than independently verified performance results.

And even if the technology works as intended, imagine the complications: flight permissions, safe landing areas, air traffic rules and the small matter of explaining to your insurance company that your car did not crash — it simply came down unexpectedly.

For now, the Roadster is more technological spectacle than solution to everyday traffic. It does not mean drivers can already trade their highway routes for the skies.

Still, the demonstration offers a glimpse of how far the boundaries of vehicle engineering can be pushed when automakers borrow ideas from the aerospace industry.

The future may indeed be arriving. It just has not received clearance for takeoff everywhere yet.

One thing is certain: the next time someone says they are stuck in traffic, the question may no longer be how long the drive will take — but whether their car can fly.
