Australia’s 10-year visitor visa: What Filipinos need to know before applying

Australia could remain on a Filipino traveler’s holiday list for years without requiring a new visitor visa application for every trip. But this convenience comes with a hefty upfront cost — and a few rules that could surprise travelers who mistake a 10-year visa for a 10-year vacation.

The Australian government’s Visitor visa (subclass 600), Frequent Traveller stream is available to eligible Filipino passport holders who regularly travel to Australia for tourism or permitted business visitor activities.

If approved, the visa may allow multiple entries over a validity period of up to 10 years. That could appeal to Filipinos with relatives Down Under, frequent holidaymakers and business visitors who expect to make repeated trips.

The catch is that the visa is expensive, approval is not guaranteed, and the length of time a traveler can remain in Australia is limited.

Ten years on paper, three months per visit

A 10-year visa does not mean travelers can live in Australia for a decade.

Under the Frequent Traveller stream, each visit is generally limited to three months. Visa holders must also comply with any conditions stated in their individual grant letter.

The official rules also limit stays to a total of 12 months within any 24-month period when the relevant condition applies. Travelers should check their visa conditions carefully rather than assuming they can repeatedly leave and re-enter Australia to reset their permitted stay.

In short, it is designed for frequent visits — not an extended relocation disguised as a holiday.

The P80,000 question

The visa has attracted attention because of reports placing its application cost at around P80,000.

That figure should be treated as an estimate, not a fixed peso price. Australian visa charges are set in Australian dollars, and the peso equivalent changes with exchange rates. Additional expenses, including biometrics or other requested requirements, may also apply.

Before applying, travelers should check the current amount through the Australian Department of Home Affairs’ official Visa Pricing Estimator.

And remember: paying the fee does not guarantee approval. It pays for the application to be assessed, not for an automatic visa grant.

Your travel budget deserves a seat at the planning table, too.

Who might find it worthwhile?

The Frequent Traveller stream may be worth considering for people who expect to visit Australia repeatedly over several years.

Potential applicants include:

  • Filipinos who regularly visit relatives or close friends in Australia.
  • Travelers who take frequent holidays Down Under.
  • Eligible business visitors who need to make recurring short trips.
  • Applicants who can demonstrate a genuine temporary visit and sufficient financial resources.

Whether the visa is suitable depends on individual circumstances. Applicants must meet the government’s requirements, and immigration officials assess applications on their merits.

For someone planning several trips over the next decade, the convenience may justify the upfront expense. For someone who only wants to see Sydney once, a standard visitor visa may be the more economical option.

Can you work while you are there?

No. The Frequent Traveller stream is a visitor visa, not a work permit.

It allows tourism, visits to family and friends, and eligible business visitor activities. It does not authorize ordinary employment in Australia.

That distinction matters for anyone hoping to turn a holiday into a job hunt. Travelers who intend to work, study for longer periods or migrate should investigate the appropriate visa category instead.

How Filipinos can apply

Eligible applicants can begin by reviewing the official Frequent Traveller stream requirements and lodging an application through Australia’s online immigration system.

Before submitting an application, travelers should:

  1. Confirm that they meet the nationality and other eligibility requirements.
  2. Check the current application fee and any additional charges.
  3. Prepare valid identity documents and evidence supporting the purpose of their visit.
  4. Provide information demonstrating their financial capacity and circumstances.
  5. Follow instructions for biometrics and any other documents requested by immigration authorities.

Applicants must be outside Australia when they apply and when the visa decision is made. Each eligible family member also needs a separate application.

Use the Australian government’s official resources for the latest requirements:

  • Frequent Traveller stream — Visitor visa subclass 600
  • ImmiAccount — online visa applications

The verdict: Convenience, not a golden ticket

A long-validity visitor visa can make repeated trips easier for eligible Filipinos who have the travel plans and budget to justify it. But its value depends on how often they expect to visit Australia and whether the cost makes sense compared with other visitor visa options.

The important thing is to understand what the visa actually provides: the possibility of multiple visits over an extended period, subject to approval and strict conditions.

So before booking a decade’s worth of beach trips, family reunions and Melbourne coffee runs, check the fine print — and make sure the numbers work.

Because a 10-year visa may keep Australia within reach, but it will not make the flights, accommodation or flat whites any cheaper.
