Rizal’s 165th Birth Anniversary Marked With Calls for Unity, Civic Responsibility

The 165th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. José Rizal was commemorated on June 19, with calls for unity, civic responsibility, and renewed commitment to education, truth, and nation-building.

Rizal’s legacy was highlighted in observances and statements recalling his enduring influence on Philippine society, particularly his advocacy for education, reform, and national consciousness during the Spanish colonial period.

His writings, including Noli Me Tangere, continue to be cited in contemporary reflections on governance and social reform, with particular attention to the tension between idealism and entrenched systems of power.

In a statement marking the occasion, Senator Loren Legarda reflected on Rizal’s relevance to present-day challenges, emphasizing the importance of conscience in public life and the need for collective action in addressing national issues.

“Rizal’s courage was expressed in his insistence that conscience must prevail over silence. His life compels us to ask: are we defending truth when it is most contested, are we protecting our environment when it is most fragile, are we nurturing education when it is most needed?” Sen. Legarda said.

She also underscored Rizal’s broader vision of nationhood, noting its links to culture, education, environmental stewardship, and civic duty.

Rizal’s influence continues to be integrated into various initiatives on education reform, heritage preservation, and environmental protection, reflecting his enduring role in shaping national identity.

Sen. Legarda also cited ongoing efforts that promote Rizal’s legacy internationally, including digital documentation of Rizal-related artifacts in Berlin, support for Philippine Studies programs abroad, and the country’s participation as Guest of Honour at the 2025 Frankfurt Book Fair.

As the nation marks Rizal Day, officials and civic leaders reiterated calls for unity and responsibility, stressing that the national hero’s ideals remain relevant in guiding the country through present-day challenges.
