House Calls for Stronger School Safety Measures After Tacloban Shooting

The House of Representatives have expressed grief and concern over the fatal shooting inside San Jose National High School in Tacloban City that left three students dead and seven others injured, while also calling for stronger measures to prevent violence in schools.

Authorities said the incident occurred Monday morning inside the school campus and involved two Grade 9 students who have since been taken into custody. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

In a statement, House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III  extended condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized that schools must remain safe spaces for learning and development.

“The House of Representatives joins the nation in mourning the students who lost their lives in this tragic incident. We extend our deepest sympathies to their families and loved ones, and we pray for the recovery of those who were injured,” the Speaker said.

He added that any form of violence within educational institutions represents a serious threat that must be addressed through coordinated action among government agencies, schools, families, and communities.

“Schools must remain places of learning, security and opportunity for every Filipino child,” he emphasized.

He also stressed that the involvement of minors in the incident highlights the need to strengthen early intervention systems, student support mechanisms, and programs focused on youth welfare and mental health.

He also pointed to the importance of identifying early warning signs and reinforcing school-based safeguards to prevent similar incidents.

“Hindi sapat na alamin kung sino ang may kasalanan. Kailangan din nating suriin kung anong mga senyales ang hindi natin napansin,” the Speaker noted, underscoring the need to improve protective systems before situations escalate into violence.

Support was also expressed for a full and impartial investigation to establish accountability and determine policy gaps that may need to be addressed.

Education and community stakeholders were likewise urged to work together to strengthen conflict resolution programs, mental health support, and early intervention initiatives for students.

“This tragedy should compel all sectors to work together to strengthen school safety, promote the well-being of our youth, and address the conditions that can lead to violence,” Dy added.
