The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has opened a covered and lighted pedestrian footbridge along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City to improve road safety near a school and ease traffic flow in the area.
The new footbridge, located in front of Maria Montessori School, was inaugurated on Tuesday as part of efforts to provide safer pedestrian access along the busy corridor.
According to the MMDA, around 1,655 pedestrians and 35,896 vehicles pass through the area daily, underscoring the need for a dedicated crossing facility.
The agency said safety concerns in the area became more urgent after a faculty member of Maria Montessori School was involved in a road crash in January 2024.
MMDA Chairman Don Artes said the footbridge is expected to help reduce the risk of road crashes by separating pedestrian movement from vehicular traffic.
“This footbridge will provide a safe facility for students, teachers, and residents in this area,” Artes said.
Quezon City Administrator Michael Victor Alimurung thanked the MMDA for responding to the community’s safety concerns.
“In Quezon City, we believe that the most important infrastructure projects are those that save lives. We are deeply grateful to the MMDA for responding to this need,” Alimurung said.
The inauguration ended with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and blessing of the facility.
The MMDA said it has completed 140 pedestrian footbridges across Metro Manila, serving an estimated three million pedestrians daily.
