The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has begun installing nature-based solutions along sidewalks on a three-kilometer stretch of C-5 Road in Pasig City as part of efforts to reduce flooding and address land subsidence.
The project uses permeable pavers made from recycled materials produced at the MMDA’s Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility at the Vitas Pumping Station in Tondo.
According to the MMDA, the permeable surface allows rainwater to seep into the ground, helping improve water absorption and lessen surface runoff during heavy rains.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said integrating nature-based solutions into the sidewalk project is expected to help mitigate land subsidence, or the gradual sinking of the ground, while also reducing flood risks in the area.
Pasig City officials, led by Mayor Vico Sotto, expressed support for the initiative, saying the project will not only strengthen flood resilience but also support the city’s goal of creating safer and more walkable spaces for residents.
