The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a total of 6,144 aftershocks following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Sarangani in Mindanao on June 8, as seismic activity continues days after the powerful quake.
As of 11:00 a.m. on June 15, Phivolcs said 78 of the aftershocks were felt in various affected areas across Mindanao, according to Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol during a teleconference briefing with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The earthquake’s epicenter was traced 32 kilometers southwest of Maasim, Sarangani, triggering widespread tremors across multiple provinces and sustained aftershock activity since the main shock.
Authorities said the continued seismic activity underscores the ongoing risks in affected communities, where thousands of families remain displaced. The death toll from the quake has reached 65, with recovery and response operations still ongoing.
