President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to undertake a state visit to Japan from May 26 to 29, aimed at further strengthening ties between Manila and Tokyo, Malacañang said Friday.
The Palace said the visit, upon the invitation of the Japanese government, will focus on expanding the Philippines–Japan strategic partnership, with discussions expected to cover energy cooperation, food security, and maritime security.
The President will be accompanied by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos during the four-day visit.
A key highlight of the trip is a courtesy call on Their Majesties Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako at the Imperial Palace. Marcos is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae.
Beyond official engagements, Marcos is expected to meet with Japanese business leaders to explore investment opportunities and engage with members of the Filipino community in Japan.
During his meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Marcos is expected to discuss the future direction of the strengthened strategic partnership, as well as regional and global issues, including energy stability, food supply chains, and maritime security.
This will be Marcos’ fourth visit to Japan since assuming the presidency in 2022. His previous trips included an official visit in February 2023, participation in the ASEAN–Japan Friendship and Cooperation Commemorative Summit in December 2023, and a working visit in June 2025.
Malacañang noted that the last Philippine state visit to Japan was in 2015 under former President Benigno Aquino III.
The upcoming visit also coincides with the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan.
