Makati Clears Drainage Waste, Urges Proper Garbage Disposal

The Makati City government has conducted clearing operations to remove drainage waste along J.P. Rizal Street in Barangay Tejeros and Vito Cruz Street in Barangay Sta. Cruz as part of its continuing efforts to maintain cleanliness and improve drainage flow in the city.

The operations were carried out by the Department of Environmental Services (DES), which cleared waste materials from canals and drainage systems in the affected areas.

According to the city government, waste collected from canals and drainage lines must first be dried for two to three weeks to remove leachate, or liquid discharge, before it can be hauled away.

The city explained that drainage waste still releasing liquid cannot be loaded onto dump trucks or transported to dumpsites, as this may cause sanitation and environmental concerns during hauling and disposal.

The Makati City government and DES appealed to the public not to dump garbage in areas where drainage waste is being dried. Officials said improper disposal in these sites could delay clearing operations and add to the volume of waste that must be processed.

Barangay officials were also urged to continuously remind residents about proper waste disposal and help prevent garbage from ending up in canals, gutters, and other drainage facilities.

The city said cooperation from communities remains essential in keeping drainage systems clear, reducing flooding risks, and maintaining public sanitation, especially in densely populated areas.
