Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala opened her Wimbledon campaign with a breakthrough victory, earning praise after advancing past the first round of the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam.
Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Wednesday welcomed Eala’s win, saying her performance offered a welcome break from the “unpleasant atmosphere” surrounding the protest rally along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue in Quezon City.
“Watching Alex Eala’s easy win in her first round of the prestigious Wimbledon Championships is a welcome departure from the unpleasant atmosphere in EDSA. Congratulations and good luck!” Lacson said on X.
Eala, 21, secured her maiden main-draw victory at Wimbledon early Wednesday, Manila time, after defeating Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in straight sets.
She will next face 20-year-old Maya Joint, who advanced after beating Serena Williams.
