CIDG Cracks Down on Counterfeit Seasoning Products, Seizes P3.8M in Pagadian and Pampanga

In a coordinated enforcement effort, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), together with Nestlé Philippines and local police units, apprehended two suspects and confiscated 815 boxes of alleged counterfeit “Maggi Magic Sarap” seasoning in operations conducted in Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur, and Guagua, Pampanga, in early June 2026. The seized goods have an estimated market value of P3,832,100.

The first operation on June 5 in Barangay Bulatok, Pagadian City, led to the arrest of a Chinese national identified as Lin, who was caught in the act of distributing fake seasoning products. Authorities seized 728 boxes valued at P3,458,000. Five days later, a second operation in Barangay Siran, Guagua, Pampanga, resulted in the apprehension of Lyn, a local businesswoman, along with 87 boxes worth P374,100.

CIDG Director Police Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II emphasized the dangers posed by counterfeit consumer goods, noting that they bypass strict quality control measures and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, putting the public at significant health risk. “Counterfeit and substandard products may appear identical to genuine brands on the outside, but the unverified ingredients inside could be hazardous,” he said.

Morico also underscored the broader purpose of Republic Act No. 8293, the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, which protects creators’ rights while ensuring consumer safety. The operation highlights the CIDG’s intensified stance against intellectual property violations and other illegal activities nationwide.

The CIDG urged the public to exercise vigilance when purchasing food seasonings and to report suspected counterfeit products, pledging swift action to safeguard both consumers and trademark owners.

The crackdown demonstrates a multi-agency commitment to enforcing intellectual property laws while protecting public health, emphasizing that vigilance, both from authorities and the community, is crucial to stopping illegal goods from reaching store shelves.
