A senior lawmaker in the Senate has backed the naturalization bids of basketball player Bennie Francois Boatwright III and wrestler Matthew James Ramos, saying both athletes could strengthen Philippine sports and inspire young Filipinos.
The senator said granting citizenship to the two athletes would recognize their commitment to representing the country in international competitions.
Boatwright is expected to reinforce Gilas Pilipinas if naturalized, while Ramos is being eyed to help raise the level of Philippine wrestling through his international experience and achievements.
“Granting citizenship to Boatwright and Ramos, who have both demonstrated excellence and commitment to the Philippines, is a recognition of the value they bring to our collective aspirations,” Senator Pia Cayetano said.
The senator stressed that sports go beyond competition, describing athletics as a platform that teaches discipline, teamwork, and excellence to the youth.
“I’ve always believed that sports is more than just a game. It is a platform for our youth to see what excellence looks like in action,” she commented.
Cayetano, an athlete herself, said her own experience in sports taught her discipline, teamwork, time management, and commitment, values she continues to carry in public service.
