Senate Urged to Expedite VP Duterte Impeachment Proceedings

A member of the House of Representatives has called on the Senate impeachment court to proceed without delay in the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, as the House prosecution panel prepares for the next phase of proceedings.

The panel is set to submit its pre-trial brief, entries of appearance from private prosecutors, and other pleadings on June 15, ahead of the pre-trial conference scheduled for June 18.

Impeachment trial spokesperson and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said the prosecution team remains focused on complying with all procedural requirements and presenting its case before the Senate impeachment court.

“Kung may kaso, dinggin. Kung walang kaso, ibasura. Pero dapat tapusin ang proseso,” he said.

He stressed that the impeachment process should not be viewed through a political lens but as a constitutional duty aimed at uncovering the truth through proper legal procedures.

“Dinggin ang kaso. Alamin ang katotohanan. Wala po sanang delay,” he added.

According to him, both the public and the parties involved are entitled to a fair, orderly, and timely resolution based on evidence to be presented before the impeachment court.

He emphasized that the Constitution lays down a clear process for impeachment that must neither be rushed nor unnecessarily stalled, noting that accountability and transparency are essential outcomes of the proceedings.

The House prosecution panel said it is ready for the next stage of the trial and committed to presenting its evidence before the Senate.

“Hindi ito kampi-kampi. Usapin ito ng proseso,” he said, adding that the Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, has the duty to hear evidence and render judgment based on facts and the Constitution.

“We are ready to do our part. We trust that the impeachment court will do its part as well. Let the proceedings move forward,” Alonto Adiong said.

He added that the “worst outcome” would be a failure to complete the constitutional process, stressing that the Filipino people deserve full resolution of the case.
