JC Buendia honors late mother with heartfelt collection at Red Charity Gala

For nearly four decades, Filipino designer JC Buendia has built a career around elegance and craftsmanship. At the 2026 Red Charity Gala, his latest collection took on a deeply personal meaning, bringing together Asian design influences, Filipino textile traditions and a tribute to his late mother.

Held at The Peninsula Manila, the 14th edition of the annual charity fashion event featured Buendia’s interpretation of “relaxed luxury,” emphasizing fluid silhouettes, comfortable construction and understated sophistication.

Inspired by traditional East and Southeast Asian clothing, the collection incorporated flowing fabrics and tunics in shades of black, blush and robin’s egg blue. The designs reflected his approach to creating garments that balance refinement with ease of movement.

Among the runway highlights was a bridal gown worn by beauty queen Bea Millan-Windorski. Made with piña fabric, the creation featured floral details and a dropped-waist silhouette inspired by 1920s fashion.

The use of piña, a textile woven from pineapple leaf fibers, highlighted how traditional Filipino materials can be incorporated into contemporary couture.

Beyond the designs, the presentation carried a personal tribute.

During the finale, Buendia appeared on the runway holding a rosary and wearing a pin bearing his late mother’s photograph. As The Rainbow Connection played, the audience rose in a standing ovation.

The gesture offered a glimpse into the personal memories behind the designer’s work, turning the conclusion of the fashion show into a moment of remembrance.

The emotional presentation was part of a larger celebration of creativity and charitable giving.

Organized by philanthropists Kaye Tinga and Tessa Prieto, the Red Charity Gala has brought together Filipino designers and supporters of charitable causes since its establishment in 2009.

The 2026 event raised ₱5.5 million for charity, according to an October 21 report by Bilyonaryo. The fundraising activities included an auction featuring artworks, jewelry, travel experiences and hotel stays.

Organizations supported by the gala included the Philippine Red Cross, Hope for Lupus Foundation, Assumption High School Batch 1981 Foundation and the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly.

Over the years, the event has showcased collections by prominent Filipino designers, including Michael Cinco, Cary Santiago, Rajo Laurel, Furne One and Rhett Eala.

For Buendia, whose career is approaching its 40th year, the occasion brought together the artistic influences and personal connections that continue to shape his work.

His presentation showed how fashion can serve as a tribute to loved ones, a celebration of cultural craftsmanship and a means of contributing to causes beyond the runway.
