24.4M Filipinos Use National ID to Open, Verify GCash Accounts

More than 24 million Filipinos have used their National ID to verify their identities and open accounts on mobile e-wallet GCash, highlighting the system’s expanding role in widening financial access across the country.

Data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that 24.4 million GCash users, representing 61 percent of all onboarded users as of May 2026, used the National ID for account verification.

According to the PSA, the National ID has emerged as the single most commonly submitted identification document for GCash verification, whether presented in physical card, paper ePhilID, or digital format.

The milestone highlights the ongoing strategic partnership between the PSA and GCash aimed at making digital financial tools accessible to underserved, unbanked, and marginalized communities nationwide.

PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, emphasized that the initiative ensures that lack of documentation no longer serves as an obstacle to economic inclusion.

“We want to make sure no Filipino gets left behind in the country’s digital transformation agenda just because they don’t have a government ID,” Mapa said.

The PSA noted that bringing National ID registration and mobile wallet onboarding directly to grassroot communities, including barangay-level mobile outposts, helps break down traditional barriers to formal banking and digital payments.

“Bringing National ID and GCash registration services directly to barangays helps remove barriers to access, providing unbanked families with a trusted means of identification and easier access to essential financial services,” Mapa added.
