LTO Suspends Drivers in Deadly QC Crash

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended the licenses of two drivers involved in a deadly road crash between a modern jeepney and an armored van in Quezon City.

The LTO said it issued show cause orders to the drivers following the collision along Quezon Avenue in Barangay Pag-Asa, which left one person dead and more than 20 others injured.

The crash happened shortly after 5 am at the intersection of Quezon Avenue and Miriam Defensor Santiago Avenue.

The drivers were directed to appear before the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) on June 4 at 1 pm to explain why they should not be held liable for possible violations, including reckless driving, being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle, and employing a reckless, insolent, discourteous, or arrogant driver.

As an interim measure, the LTO placed the involved vehicles under alarm status and imposed a 90-day preventive suspension on the drivers’ licenses.

The drivers were also ordered to immediately surrender their licenses to the agency’s investigation division.

LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao said the agency would not tolerate irresponsible driving, especially in incidents where passengers and other road users are placed in danger.

“Every road accident serves as a clear reminder that the road is no place for negligence. When a driver fails to exercise proper caution, it is not only the law that is violated, but also the trust and safety of every passenger who relies on reaching their destination safely,” Lacanilao said.

“We will not tolerate any form of irresponsible driving, and those responsible must be held accountable in accordance with the law,” he added.

The LTO said the administrative proceedings will determine the liability of the drivers and any further sanctions that may be imposed.
