Energy Secretary Sharon Garin has urged energy investors to leverage government exploration and development programs for new geothermal sites, underscoring the critical role of geothermal power in advancing the Philippines’ renewable energy agenda.
Speaking at the 7th Philippine International Geothermal Conference held at the Mount Malarayat Golf & Country Club in Lipa City, Garin reaffirmed the Marcos administration’s commitment to boosting renewable energy in the national energy mix.
Expanding the nation’s geothermal capacity is central to fortifying long-term energy security and defending the country’s position as the world’s second-largest producer of geothermal energy, according to the Energy Chief. Garin noted that geothermal power remains one of the most reliable and suitable indigenous energy sources for the Philippines due to its ability to supply baseload electricity around the clock.
However, the Energy Secretary emphasized that aggressive capacity expansion must not come at the expense of ecological balance.
Garin reminded energy companies that developing new fields requires strict adherence to environmental safeguards to protect surrounding ecosystems. This includes safeguarding local water resources, preserving forests and maintaining open dialogue with host communities that could be affected by field operations.
Urging industry stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices, Garin called for a collaborative approach to unlocking the country’s extensive geothermal potential while preserving natural habitats for future generations.
