The Manila Health Department (MHD) has recorded 16 new cases of leptospirosis and one additional death in the city, according to its latest disease surveillance update released Monday, August 24.

The latest figures bring the capital city’s total number of leptospirosis cases to 229 from Jan. 1 to Aug. 24, with the overall death toll reaching 13.

Health authorities also reported five new dengue cases, raising Manila’s cumulative count to 2,367 for the year. A total of eight people have died from dengue in the city so far.

Monitoring data further showed five new cases of influenza-like illness (ILI), bringing the total to 1,002, alongside three new cases of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), which brought its total to 298.

No new cases of cholera, typhoid fever or COVID-19 were logged during the latest surveillance period.

In response to the health updates, the MHD urged residents to refrain from wading through floodwaters, maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and seek immediate medical attention if they display any symptoms of illness.
