MMDA Seeks P50,000 Fine vs EDSA Contractor Over Heavy Traffic

  • August 24, 2026

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has recommended a ₱50,000 fine against the contractor managing asphalt works along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) after the project caused severe traffic congestion on Sunday, August 23.

The affected stretch spanned from Guadalupe to Shaw Boulevard. On Monday, the MMDA shared photos on Facebook illustrating heavy gridlock extending across major thoroughfares from Makati to Mandaluyong.

The traffic agency stated that it has coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the agency overseeing the overall EDSA Rehabilitation Project, to formally impose the fine on the non-compliant contractor.

MMDA said the contractor failed to deploy flagmen at the site. The agency noted that having dedicated traffic personnel on the ground was necessary to guide passing motorists and mitigate the bottleneck caused by the ongoing asphalt laying.

In light of the incident, the MMDA reminded all contractors handling projects on major thoroughfares to strictly execute proper traffic management protocols to prevent severe road disruptions and protect the safety of all road users.
