Alex Eala delivered the kind of Centre Court moment Philippine tennis had long been waiting for.
The 21-year-old Filipina stunned defending champion and No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek, 7-6(9), 6-2, in the third round of Wimbledon, sending her into the fourth round of the grass-court Grand Slam. Official Wimbledon results confirmed Eala’s straight-sets victory over Swiatek on Centre Court.
The win placed Eala in the second week of a major for the first time and marked a breakthrough for Philippine tennis, with the WTA reporting that she became the first Filipino player to reach that stage in Grand Slam singles play.
Eala had to earn the moment the hard way. The opening set stretched into a tense tiebreak, where she held firm against one of the sport’s most accomplished players and took it, 11-9. From there, the Filipina played with more freedom, breaking Swiatek’s rhythm and controlling key rallies in the second set.
Swiatek, the reigning Wimbledon champion, tried to claw back into the match, but Eala kept finding answers. She attacked when the chance came, defended with discipline, and stayed composed in the points that usually tilt toward top seeds.
The result ended Swiatek’s title defense and sent Eala into the last 16, a stage few Filipino tennis fans had ever seen one of their own reach in a Grand Slam singles draw.
For Eala, the victory was more than an upset. It was a statement that her rise on the WTA Tour has moved beyond promise and into proof.
Her road will only get tougher. Eala is set to face No. 13 seed Jasmine Paolini, last year’s Wimbledon finalist, for a place in the quarterfinals. The official draw shows Paolini also advancing to the fourth round after a straight-sets win.
