President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has extended the Philippines’ sympathies and solidarity to the people of Venezuela following back-to-back powerful earthquakes that struck the country on Wednesday (local time in Venezuela).

In a statement posted on his official social media accounts, Marcos expressed condolences after the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes caused widespread damage and disruption.

“Deeply saddened by the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela. On behalf of the Filipino people, I extend our heartfelt sympathies,” the President said.

“The Philippines stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan people during this difficult time and hopes for the safety and swift recovery of all communities affected,” he added.

The first quake struck around 6 p.m. (BST), followed minutes later by a second tremor that triggered building collapses and damage to key infrastructure, including the country’s main airport, which was temporarily shut down.

Widespread power outages in several areas were also reported, while the metro system was suspended amid the aftermath.
