PNP Vows Accountability in Ateneo Student-Athlete Deaths

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has vowed full accountability in the investigation into the deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, saying no one will be spared if evidence establishes liability.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Thursday assured the families that the probe was conducted thoroughly and based on evidence, ahead of the expected referral of the case to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday.

“We assure the families that the investigation was conducted thoroughly, objectively, and based on evidence,” Nartatez said.

Interior Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla earlier said the case is set to be elevated to the DOJ, while Nartatez previously noted that around 10 to 11 individuals, mostly linked to Ateneo’s basketball program, may face charges.

The two student-athletes drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8. Authorities have been examining possible violations of the anti-hazing law.

Nartatez said the PNP will submit its findings and recommendations and pursue accountability wherever evidence leads.

“No one will be exempt from accountability if the evidence establishes responsibility,” he said.

He also stressed the need for stricter safety standards in school-related activities, including camps, training programs, and sports events.

“The safety and welfare of students must always come first,” he said, adding that such activities must follow proper supervision, risk assessment, and emergency preparedness protocols.

Nartatez also recommended a mandatory safety and accountability framework for school-sponsored activities, including clear protocols, designated officers, and documented emergency response plans.
