PNP Seizes P22.29-M in Illicit Cigarettes Off Zamboanga Sibugay

The Philippine National Police intercepted an estimated ₱22.29 million worth of illicit cigarettes during a maritime law enforcement operation in the municipal waters of Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay, early Friday.

The operation led to the arrest of four suspects, all adult Filipino males.

According to the PNP, the operation was led by the Maritime Group’s Regional Maritime Unit 9 in coordination with local police and partner law enforcement agencies.

Authorities launched the operation after receiving information on the alleged transport of contraband by sea. The operating team later intercepted a motorized pump boat carrying hundreds of master cases of suspected illicit cigarettes.

Police said the four suspects failed to present documents proving the lawful transport and possession of the cargo. They were informed of their constitutional rights before being taken into police custody.

Recovered during the operation were 375 master cases of assorted illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of ₱21.49 million.

Authorities also seized the motorized boat used to transport the cargo, bringing the total estimated value of the confiscated items to ₱22.29 million.

The PNP said appropriate charges are being prepared for alleged violations of the Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act and other applicable laws, while authorities continue validation and case build-up.

The agency said the operation supports its Focused Agenda, particularly Enhanced Managing Police Operations, by strengthening efforts against smuggling and other illegal activities that undermine legitimate industries and deprive the government of revenues.

It also said the operation complements the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to intensify law enforcement actions that protect the economy and secure the country’s borders.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. commended the operating teams for their swift and coordinated response.
