Police arrested two suspects after a barangay tanod was fatally shot while trying to stop a street brawl between two groups in Barangay Buting, Pasig City.
The victim, Marlon Sabandal, 41, had served in the barangay security force for more than a decade. He died at a hospital after sustaining two gunshot wounds.
Police said the confrontation began after two groups who had been drinking separately argued over an alleged hostile stare.
“Ang lumalabas sa imbestigasyon, ang pinagsimulan titigan. Masama raw tumingin ‘yung isa, sinita nung isa. ‘Yun lang ang pinagsimulan hanggang sa magsuntukan,” Barangay Buting Chairman Marlon Jigs Servillon said.
CCTV footage showed a man retrieving a firearm from a vehicle and handing it to another suspect, who allegedly shot Sabandal as he attempted to stop the fight.
Despite his injuries, Sabandal managed to walk toward a barangay tricycle before collapsing. The alleged gunman fled the area on a motorcycle.
Two suspects were immediately arrested, while authorities launched a manhunt for the alleged shooter and other accomplices who escaped.
Sabandal’s family appealed for justice as fellow barangay personnel mourned his death and honored his service.
“Ginagawa niya talaga ‘yung duty niya, ‘yung tungkulin niya. Malaking kawalan sa amin si Marlon,” Servillon said.
