Two Ateneo de Manila University basketball student-athletes died after drowning during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on Monday afternoon.
Police identified the victims as Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili. Initial findings showed no indication of foul play in their deaths.
In a statement, Ateneo expressed “profound sadness” over the tragedy and mourned the loss of the two student-athletes.
“The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones,” Ateneo said.
The university also asked the community to keep the victims and their families in their prayers during what it described as a most difficult time.
Ateneo said it is providing support to the bereaved families, as well as to the teammates and members of the university community affected by the incident.
The Central Luzon police regional office also extended its condolences to the families, friends, teammates and the Ateneo community.
Police said personnel from the Dipaculao municipal police station responded to the area after receiving a report on the incident and immediately coordinated with concerned agencies for assistance.
The victims were brought to a medical facility but were later pronounced dead by the attending physician.
Authorities said they are conducting a thorough investigation in coordination with concerned agencies to ensure that all aspects of the incident are properly addressed.
“While the investigation remains ongoing, initial findings indicate that the victims were swimming when they were reportedly carried by a strong current into deeper waters,” the Central Luzon police said.
Police urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is underway.
They also reminded beachgoers and tourists to observe safety advisories and exercise caution during water activities, particularly in areas where strong currents may be present.
