Singer Behind ‘DOTA o Ako?’ Vanessa Blanca Dies at 30

Before TikTok trends and algorithm-driven hits, one question became instantly familiar to Filipino gamers and their girlfriends: “DOTA o ako?”

The viral music video of the same name paired rapper Aikee with Vanessa Blanca, who played a girlfriend confronting her boyfriend over his obsession with the game.

More than a decade later, the song remains a recognizable piece of Filipino gaming nostalgia.

Vanessa Blanca Quillo Rangadhol died on August 19, 2026, according to her family. She was 30.

Her first cousin, Ivy Ann Salaum Jubelag, confirmed her death on Facebook.

According to Jubelag, Vanessa was getting dressed in the bathroom of her condominium in Manila when she tripped and fell, hitting her face and head. Her cousin said she suffered a severe traumatic brain injury that resulted in internal brain hemorrhage. Emergency assistance was called, but Vanessa did not survive.

Born on December 6, 1995, Vanessa was the only daughter of Anabella Quillo-Kalinski, according to the family.

“Rest peacefully, my dear Wani,” Jubelag wrote. “You were deeply loved, and you will forever be remembered and missed.”

The question that defined an era

“DOTA o Ako” went viral around 2011, when Defense of the Ancients was deeply embedded in Philippine computer-shop culture.

Its premise was simple: a gamer spending too much time on DOTA and a girlfriend asking where she stood.

The videoke-style presentation and distinctly Pinoy humor helped the video spread online. By 2021, contemporary reports said it had amassed around 24 million views on YouTube.

“DOTA o Ako?” became more than a song title. It turned into a joke and relationship dilemma familiar to Filipino gamers.

In 2021, Vanessa reunited with Aikee for “DOTA at Ako: DOTA o Ako 10 Years After,” a sequel released as part of Netflix’s Philippine promotion of DOTA: Dragon’s Blood.

“I was so excited in general to be working with Aikee again cause it has really been a long time since our collaboration — 10 years ago to be exact,” Vanessa said at the time.

“I knew I was gonna do it. I had to do it for sure,” she added.

Before ‘DOTA o Ako’

Vanessa had already appeared on Philippine television years before the viral hit.

Archival reports from 2006 identified Vanessa Blanca Rangadhol as one of the five grand finalists in the first season of QTV 11’s Pop Star Kids, alongside Rita Daniela Iringan, Pocholo Bismonte, Renzo Ramil Almario and Julie Anne San Jose.

Following news of her death, San Jose remembered Vanessa by her nickname, “Wani.”

“Still can’t believe it. Plano pa naman natin mag reunion. Sugarpop will never be the same without you,” she wrote.

Aikee also shared their original song and paid tribute to his longtime collaborator.

“Mahal na mahal ko tong Patner kong to eh. Mamamalagi siya sa Puso ko. Isa sa mga Tunay at Mapagmahal na Kapatid!” he wrote.

According to Jubelag, a public viewing is scheduled on August 21 at 6 p.m. at Loyola Memorial Chapels in Commonwealth, Quezon City. She also asked friends, fans and the public to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.

Vanessa was only 30, but the cultural moment she helped create has lasted 15 years.

Computer shops became less central to gaming culture. DOTA evolved. New games and platforms took over.

Still, Filipinos remember the question.

For many, “DOTA o Ako?” remains a reminder of crowded computer shops, barkada gaming sessions and the early days of Pinoy YouTube.

And at the center of that memory is Vanessa Blanca.

The question started as a joke. It became part of Filipino internet history.
