The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered the relief of a police officer in Tuguegarao City following an alleged assault on a tricycle driver, as the agency renewed its call for strict adherence to standard operating procedures.
PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. denounced the incident, saying misconduct among officers will not be tolerated, and vowed to conduct a thorough investigation.
“We do not tolerate hoodlums in uniform,” Nartatez said, noting that the swift removal of the officer reflects ongoing internal disciplinary efforts. He added that authorities are working to ensure accountability and justice for the victim.
The officer is under investigation after reportedly striking a tricycle driver who had been involved in a road collision in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. The incident, captured on video and later circulated online, went viral and drew public attention.
Police said the driver was initially flagged down as part of standard response procedures regarding a traffic accident, but allegedly fled, which prompted a pursuit. The chase reportedly ended in another collision involving a second tricycle, after which the officer allegedly confronted and hit the driver.
Nartatez confirmed that the officer involved, along with his immediate commander and team leader, has been relieved from duty to allow for an impartial probe.
He said the move underscores the PNP’s efforts to enforce discipline within its ranks, particularly in interactions with civilians.
“Your badge is a symbol of service, not a license for abuse,” Nartatez said, as he reminded personnel to exercise maximum tolerance and uphold respect for human rights.
