The Philippine National Police has ordered police units in areas affected by volcanic haze from Mt. Kanlaon to strengthen health protection measures for personnel while continuing public safety and security operations.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. directed regional and provincial police offices in affected areas to strictly enforce health and safety protocols for officers exposed to volcanic haze.
Police commanders were also instructed to conduct daily health monitoring of deployed personnel and immediately refer officers showing respiratory symptoms or other health concerns for medical evaluation.
The directive follows the instructions of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr., through the guidance of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to protect the public and frontline government personnel while ensuring uninterrupted public service during emergencies.
“The safety of our personnel is our priority. I have directed all police commanders in affected areas to ensure that officers assigned to outdoor duties are provided with appropriate protective equipment, including N95 masks whenever necessary,” PGEN Nartatez said.
Pharmacies in Cebu City have been scrambling to replenish supplies of N95 masks after panic buying followed the moderate explosive eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on July 9.
The Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas warned that volcanic haze and ashfall could affect air quality in parts of Cebu.
Local authorities advised residents to wear properly fitted N95 or KN95 masks, limit outdoor exposure, monitor official advisories, and avoid spreading misinformation.
“They should also minimize unnecessary exposure to volcanic haze and strictly follow the health advisories issued by the Department of Health, PAGASA, and local authorities while continuing to provide uninterrupted public service,” PGEN Nartatez said.
Nartatez reminded police personnel to protect themselves while remaining prepared to respond to the needs of affected communities.
“I thank our police officers for their unwavering dedication to protecting our communities. While carrying out your mission, never compromise your own safety. Wear the proper protective gear and remain vigilant,” PGEN Nartatez said.
