PNP Nets P6.09M in Anti-Smuggling Ops in Zamboanga; 3 Arrested

The Philippine National Police (PNP) intensified its anti-smuggling campaign following two separate operations in Zamboanga Peninsula and Zamboanga City that resulted in the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of smuggled cigarettes worth an estimated P6,099,887.52.

The operations, carried out on June 11 and June 13, 2026, were led by units of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in coordination with local police units and the Bureau of Customs, targeting the transport and distribution of contraband tobacco products in the region.

Authorities said the operations are part of the PNP Focused Agenda, particularly under Enhanced Managing Police Operations, which prioritizes coordinated action against organized illegal and economic crimes.

On June 11, operatives from the CIDG Zamboanga del Sur Field Unit, together with the Tukuran Municipal Police Station and other support units, intercepted a vehicle transporting smuggled cigarettes in Brgy. Baclay, Tukuran.

Two suspects were arrested in the operation. Authorities recovered around 50 master cases of cigarettes with an estimated value of P2.85 million.

The suspects and confiscated goods were placed under police custody for documentation and filing of appropriate charges.

A follow-up operation on June 13 in Purok Shalom, Barangay San Roque, Zamboanga City led to the arrest of a 25-year-old Filipino male and the recovery of 22 master cases of smuggled cigarettes.

Operatives from CIDG Zamboanga City Field Unit, Police Station 7 of the Zamboanga City Police Office, and the Bureau of Customs Region IX also recovered a white van allegedly used in transporting the contraband.

The seized items from the operation were valued at P3,249,887.52.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. commended operating units for sustained coordination and enforcement against smuggling and other economic crimes.

“These successful operations show how coordination and discipline produce real results on the ground,” Nartatez said, stressing the need to sustain efforts against illicit trade that undermines the economy.

The PNP said all arrested suspects remain under custody while charges are being prepared. Seized evidence has been turned over to proper authorities for further investigation and legal action.

Authorities reiterated that anti-smuggling operations will continue as part of broader efforts to strengthen law enforcement and protect economic stability under ongoing police reforms.

The PNP reaffirmed its commitment to its campaign slogan, “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman,” underscoring a more responsive and accountable policing strategy.
