PNP Mobilizes Units for Water Conservation Amid El Niño Dry Spell

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has directed all its units nationwide to intensify water conservation measures and prepare support mechanisms for communities that may experience shortages amid the ongoing dry season linked to El Niño conditions.

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., issued the directive following a water conservation advisory from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), as parts of the country continue to experience the effects of the weather pattern.

“I have directed all police units to strictly implement water conservation measures, including the immediate repair of leaks, responsible use of water in camps and stations, and the adoption of water-saving practices in daily operations. We want to ensure that every police facility contributes to the national effort to conserve water during the dry season,” Nartatez said.

Beyond internal conservation efforts, police units have been instructed to coordinate with local government units to prepare for possible water distribution support operations should scarcity worsen in affected areas.

Nartatez emphasized that public cooperation remains essential in mitigating the impacts of El Niño, in line with the government’s broader response strategy under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“We encourage the public to practice responsible water consumption and cooperate with local government efforts to address the effects of El Niño. Conserving water today will help protect communities from more serious shortages in the coming months,” he said.

The PNP said internal logistics and infrastructure assessments are ongoing at Camp Crame and regional offices, including inspections of water systems and pipelines aimed at reducing waste and improving efficiency in police facilities.

The state weather bureau has earlier warned that elevated temperatures and prolonged dry conditions may persist, raising the risk of localized water rationing in densely populated areas.

In anticipation, police logistics units have been placed on standby to deploy assets such as water tankers and transport vehicles to assist civilian distribution efforts if needed.

“The PNP stands ready to support local authorities in maintaining peace and order and assisting affected communities should water scarcity become a concern in their areas,” Nartatez added.
