The Philippines is set to host its first official visit by a Paraguayan president next week, marking a milestone in bilateral relations as both countries seek to expand cooperation in key sectors.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will welcome Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios at Malacañang Palace on May 11, where the visiting leader will be accorded full honors before holding bilateral talks.
According to the Presidential Communications Office, the visit signals a deepening of ties between Manila and Asunción and builds on more than six decades of diplomatic relations.
“This visit marks a significant milestone in Philippines–Paraguay relations, as it will be the first official visit by a Paraguayan president to the Philippines,” the PCO said.
Both leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, and agriculture, as the Philippines seeks to broaden engagement with Latin American partners.
The PCO described Paraguay as an emerging partner in the region, noting that both countries share common values rooted in democracy, the rule of law, and a commitment to international cooperation.
The visit also reflects Manila’s effort to diversify its economic partnerships beyond traditional allies amid a shifting global landscape.
The Philippines and Paraguay established formal diplomatic relations on December 12, 1962.
