Palarong Pambansa 2026 Set to Open With More Sports, Bigger Field

The 2026 Palarong Pambansa is ready to open in Agusan del Sur with more sports events, expanded participation, and updated competition rules aimed at making the country’s premier student-athlete sports meet more inclusive and competitive.

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara said preparations for the 66th edition of the annual games have been finalized, with the host province ready to welcome around 11,000 student-athletes from across the country.

“Palarong Pambansa continues to evolve alongside the aspirations of our learners. This year, we are opening more spaces for participation, recognizing more forms of athletic excellence, and creating a competition environment that is fairer and more inclusive for every student-athlete,” Angara said.

The games, carrying the theme “Unlocking the Future Through Sports,” will run from May 24 to 31, 2026. The event is being organized by the provincial government of Agusan del Sur, DepEd-Caraga, and the Schools Division Office of Agusan del Sur, in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

This year’s Palaro will feature weightlifting, secondary girls’ football, and elementary girls’ futsal as regular sports. Karate, kickboxing, and soft tennis will be included as demonstration sports, while muay thai, sitting volleyball, and table tennis paragames will be staged as exhibition events.

Participation will also widen with the return of the Negros Island Region as a separate delegation. The Philippine Schools Overseas and the National Academy of Sports will also join as independent delegations, further broadening the reach of the competition.

DepEd is implementing revised competition guidelines to promote fair play, including a modified winner-take-all policy for major team sports, continued qualifying standards for athletics, swimming, and archery, and the Home Region Representation Policy.

Qualified athletes from the National Training Pool and National Developmental Pool will also be allowed to compete.

Angara said the changes are consistent with the government’s goal of using sports as a platform for youth development, discipline, and national unity.

“We believe that through a fairer and more inclusive Palarong Pambansa this year, every young athlete will be given greater opportunities to fully showcase their talent, potential, and excellence,” he said.

The education chief said the 2026 Palaro aims to give student-athletes a stronger national stage to demonstrate skill, character, and sportsmanship while opening more opportunities for young Filipinos in competitive sports.
