The Naval Command Western Mindanao (NCWM) has intensified maritime security operations after intercepting four vessels allegedly carrying smuggled cigarettes in separate operations across the region.
The Philippine Navy said the operations, led by Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo Reyes Jr., PN, were part of continuing efforts to secure Western Mindanao’s maritime domain, maintain peace and order, and prevent Philippine waters from being used for illegal activities.
The latest operation took place on July 6, 2026, when Naval Task Force 61 intercepted M/V Jepajoy off Tongkil Island in Sulu.
During a Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure operation, naval personnel found 3,068 master cases and 29 reams of undocumented cigarettes with an estimated market value of P474,136,265.
The vessel and its four crew members were brought to the Port of Zamboanga for turnover to the proper authorities for the filing of charges and further disposition.
The Navy said the apprehension followed three other successful interdiction operations conducted by NTF 61 units from June 23 to July 5 in the waters of Maguindanao del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Sulu.
Authorities said the operations disrupted smuggling activities and supported the government’s campaign against the entry of untaxed goods in Western Mindanao.
Reyes commended the operating units for their professionalism, vigilance, and commitment to duty.
He said NCWM will continue aggressive maritime security operations to protect the country’s maritime borders, prevent illegal activities at sea, and help shield communities from transnational crimes that threaten national security and economic stability.
The Philippine Navy said the operations reflect its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and supporting the government’s whole-of-nation campaign against illegal maritime activities.
