Maynilad targets more illegal water connections in Baseco

Concerns over potential drinking water contamination and systemic pressure drops have prompted water utility officials to expand enforcement operations targeting unauthorized underground tappings across the Baseco area in Manila.

The drive aims to halt unauthorized line tapping that imperils paying customers by degrading overall water supply volume and exposing clean water distribution lines to potential pollutants.

Since launching this year’s targeted anti-illegal connection campaign on Monday, Maynilad teams have unseated and sealed 36 unauthorized lines.

The removal of the illicit connections has already recovered an estimated 180,000 liters of water per day in distribution savings.

During a field investigation broadcast on “24 Oras” by Mark Salazar on Friday, utility workers excavated a target zone and uncovered 11 illegal connections attached to a single main line at a depth of less than two feet.

Crew members located the underground line breaches using acoustic detection devices that register the sound of water flowing through unauthorized pipes.

Illegal tapping in Baseco was first uncovered in 2025, when investigators discovered organized operations selling stolen water drawn from unauthorized connections.

Maynilad Business Area spokesperson Rona Librella noted that the extent of illicit connections forced the company to replace the entire water pipeline network in the area last year to stem massive water losses and stabilize weak water pressure.

Librella emphasized that removing the initial 36 connections is only the start of the current crackdown, as technical teams have identified additional unauthorized tappings scheduled for dismantling in upcoming operations.

Enforcement measures last year resulted in the arrest of 12 individuals linked to illegal water connections, with seven tied to syndicates peddling stolen water. However, only five of those arrested underwent inquest proceedings.

Maynilad reiterated that unauthorized pipe breaches pose severe public health risks alongside commercial losses, as unsealed openings can draw outside contaminants directly into the clean water line.
