President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday inspected the National Academy of Sports facilities at the New Clark City Sports Complex in Capas, Tarlac, as the government pushed efforts to strengthen grassroots sports and support young Filipino athletes.
Marcos, accompanied by Education Secretary Sonny Angara, toured the academy and met student-athletes from various disciplines.
He visited the fully operational Phase 1 facilities, including the Academic and Administration Building and the Multi-Sports Gymnasium.
The President also inspected the Phase 2 facilities, which are 98 percent complete. These include a Gymnastics Hall, Sports Performance Building and residential facilities for students and staff.
For School Year 2026–2022027, the academy supports 246 student-athletes specializing in aquatics, athletics, badminton, gymnastics, judo, table tennis and taekwondo.
The athletes receive dormitory accommodations, daily meals and snacks, a monthly allowance of ₱3,000 and other forms of support.
NAS athletes won 1,029 medals in national and international competitions in 2025.
At the 2026 Palarong Pambansa, academy-supported athletes secured 26 medals—10 gold, five silver and 11 bronze.
The National Academy of Sports was established under Republic Act No. 11470 to provide specialized education and athletic training for gifted young Filipinos.
