President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited a top nuclear research facility in Singapore on Saturday, October 10, exploring potential bilateral cooperation on nuclear science, safety frameworks and technical research to bolster long-term Philippine energy security.
On the sidelines of his working visit to Singapore, President Marcos inspected the Sindapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute (SNRSI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), touring its specialized laboratories and received a briefing on radiochemistry, radiobiology and nuclear safety analysis.
The President was received by Dr. Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry), alongside senior officials of NUS, SNRSI and Temasek Foundation.
“As our economy grows, so does our need for reliable, affordable and cleaner energy,” Marcos said in a social media post after the tour. “Our goal is to secure an energy future where Filipino families and businesses have access to sufficient, affordable and dependable electricity, with safety remaining our highest priority.”
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said that with Singapore set to undergo an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) review next year, “the visit provided a timely opportunity for both countries to discuss technical knowledge exchange and research cooperation in nuclear safety, regulation and building technical expertise.”
“Both sides acknowledged that sustained regional cooperation and knowledge-sharing on nuclear safety, regulatory frameworks, emergency preparedness and public communication will provide a stronger foundation for considering emerging energy technologies across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),” it added.
SNRSI serves as Singapore’s primary center for nuclear expertise, focusing on reactor safety modeling, radionuclide dispersion, radiochemistry, radiobiology and international nuclear policy.
