A congressional inquiry has been proposed to investigate the deaths of two Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes during a training activity in Aurora Province, with lawmakers seeking to determine accountability and prevent similar tragedies.
House Resolution 1112, filed by Rep. Toby Tiangco, calls for a hearing to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building exercise. The resolution directs the Committee on Youth and Sports Development to assess whether existing laws, policies, and safety protocols governing collegiate athletics are sufficient.
The investigation will review health and safety standards, emergency response procedures, the presence of medical personnel during training, and the roles of coaches, trainers, schools, and sports governing bodies. It will also evaluate the responsibilities of agencies such as the Philippine Sports Commission, Commission on Higher Education, Department of Education, Department of Health, and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.
The solon from Navotas, himself an Ateneo alumnus, emphasized that the inquiry seeks to establish facts and accountability while respecting due process. “We cannot bring Rene and Divine back. But we can honor their memory by ensuring that the truth comes out and that every institution entrusted with the welfare of student-athletes is held to the highest standard of responsibility and care,” he said.
The resolution aims to determine if additional measures or legislation are needed to enhance the safety and protection of student-athletes across the country. The lawmaker assured families that the inquiry is intended to safeguard the welfare of young athletes, not to prejudge any individual or institution.
