Manila Water expands raw water sources to safeguard east zone vs El Niño

Manila Water is ramping up the expansion of its raw water sources and infrastructure developments across its East Zone service area to maintain uninterrupted water supply as the impact of El Niño threatens traditional water levels.

A centerpiece of the concessionaire’s expansion strategy is the near-completion of the East Bay Phase 2 Water Supply System, which taps into the eastern section of Laguna Lake.

The project marked a major milestone with the completion of its 31.5-kilometer submarine transmission pipeline network. Once operational, the system will supply an additional 200 million liters per day (MLD) of treated water to consumers.

When integrated with the existing 50-MLD East Bay Phase 1 Water Treatment Plant, Manila Water’s facilities drawing from Laguna Lake will provide a combined total capacity of 250 MLD.

Concurrently, Manila Water is putting the finishing touches on the 220-MLD Kaysakat Water Treatment Plant located in Antipolo City. Operating as Phase 2 of the broader Wawa-Calawis (Kaysakat) Water Supply System, the facility is designed to process raw water sourced from the upper Wawa Dam system.

To further diversify its supply mix away from sole reliance on Angat Dam, the utility continues to operate its existing off-grid treatment facilities, including the 100-MLD Cardona Water Treatment Plant and the 80-MLD Calawis Water Treatment Plant.

By developing alternative raw water sources and building redundant infrastructure, Manila Water aims to reinforce system reliability and cushion households across the East Zone against severe dry spells brought on by El Niño.
