LRMC Bolsters LRT-1 Infrastructure to Maintain Service Throughout Heavy Monsoon Rains

Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), the private concessionaire operating Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), has strengthened its maintenance routines, infrastructure resilience and disaster response protocols to guarantee continuous train operations during severe weather occurrences in Metro Manila and neighboring regions.

Despite recent typhoons and heavy monsoon downpours that disrupted land transit and led to class and work cancellations across the capital, LRMC kept its entire railway line fully functional.

During August 2026, the elevated railway logged an average daily volume of 376,000 riders, highlighting its role as a vital transport link when severe weather disrupts surface travel.

“At LRMC, our commitment to providing a safe, reliable, and seamless journey for our passengers is absolute. Every challenge presents an opportunity for us to refine our operations and reinforce the standards of service our commuters deserve,” Enrico R. Benipayo, LRMC president and chief executive said.

“By acting swiftly on feedback and continuously upgrading our protocols, we ensure that LRT-1 remains a safe and dependable mobility partner for every Filipino, even during severe weather,” he added.

The operator also resolved a localized water leak detected inside a passenger car belonging to a Generation 4 train set during recent downpours.

A technical audit by the engineering department located the fault in a degraded air-conditioning unit (ACU) drain line valve, which suffered premature failure ahead of its estimated three-to-five-year operational lifespan.

Technicians immediately installed a replacement part and subjected the train set to rigorous safety checks before restoring it to active service.

Moving forward, LRMC noted that it is expanding its fleet-wide preventive maintenance checks to prevent similar component failures.
