Sen. Jose Pimentel “Jinggoy” Ejercito Jr. Estrada has dismissed criticism surrounding his remarks during a Senate naturalization hearing, saying the comments were meant as “friendly banter” rather than an attempt to belittle the applicant.
The exchange gained attention online after clips from the hearing circulated on social media, prompting questions about the tone of the questioning during the legislative proceedings.
Estrada later clarified that there was no malicious intent behind the remarks and that the conversation took place in a lighthearted context.
“It was just friendly banter. There was no intention to offend anyone,” Estrada said when asked about the issue in remarks reported by local media.
Naturalization hearings in the Senate are conducted to determine whether applicants seeking Philippine citizenship meet legal requirements under existing laws.
During such hearings, lawmakers often ask questions about an applicant’s background, knowledge of the country, and commitment to its laws and institutions.
Estrada said the Senate remains serious about ensuring that only qualified individuals are granted citizenship through the legislative naturalization process.
“We take the process very seriously. We make sure applicants meet the requirements set by law,” he said in earlier statements about Senate naturalization proceedings.
Observers note that Senate hearings often vary in tone depending on the lawmakers presiding over them, with some adopting a conversational style during questioning.
Despite the criticism, the Senate continues to process naturalization applications as part of its legislative mandate.
