The TOWNS Foundation has issued a strongly worded statement expressing “profound disappointment” over the recent political actions of Senator Loren Legarda, warning that her decisions risk weakening public trust in democratic institutions.
In a statement, the organization behind “The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service” recognition said Legarda had long been regarded as a model of intellect, courage, independence, and principled public service, qualities for which she was previously honored by the foundation.
However, the group said many who once admired the senator now feel dismayed by what it described as political decisions perceived to place “political protection above truth, accountability, and justice.”
“At a critical moment in our nation’s history, when the Filipino people expect moral clarity and fidelity to the Constitution, the decision to align with forces perceived to place political protection above truth, accountability, and justice risks weakening public trust in democratic institutions,” the statement read.
The foundation said the consequences extend beyond politics, warning that silence or compromise from respected leaders could deepen public cynicism and damage confidence in Philippine democracy.
According to the group, TOWNS awardees are expected to stand firm during difficult moments and defend constitutional principles even when doing so becomes unpopular.
“TOWNS women are expected to stand firm in moments precisely like this,” the organization stated.
The foundation also emphasized that leadership should not merely be measured through achievement or influence, but through integrity and the willingness to uphold democratic institutions and accountability.
It further urged Legarda to reflect on whether her recent actions remain aligned with the values for which she was recognized by the organization.
“The harm done to public trust and to the nation’s moral standing need not be permanent,” the statement said.
The organization added that the senator still has an opportunity to help restore confidence in democratic institutions by choosing “the path of constitutional fidelity, justice, and moral leadership.”
The statement concluded with an appeal for Legarda to rise above political divisions and act in the interest of the country and her public legacy.
