JENNIE’s ‘Fallen Angel’ Is a Sharp Turn After ‘Ruby’

After spending Ruby showing how expansive her solo career could be, JENNIE has followed it with something considerably smaller.

Released August 28, Fallen Angel contains only three songs and runs for less than nine minutes. The digital EP brings together “FALLEN ANGEL,” “HEAVEN” and the previously released “Less than a Lover.”

Its size is part of what makes the release interesting.

JENNIE’s 2025 debut album Ruby stretched across 15 tracks and featured collaborations with Dua Lipa, Doechii, Dominic Fike, Childish Gambino, Kali Uchis and FKJ. It debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and established the BLACKPINK member as a solo pop artist operating well beyond occasional releases between group projects.

Fallen Angel does not try to repeat that scale.

Instead, the EP moves toward a hazier, more restrained sound, with guitars, distortion and softer vocals running through its three tracks.

“Less than a Lover,” released in July, offered the first preview. Its relaxed production surrounds a relationship deliberately kept somewhere short of commitment. The song also found an audience in the Philippines, debuting at No. 19 on the Billboard Philippines Hot 100 in August.

“HEAVEN” takes a darker route, pairing dreamy production and distorted guitars with the pull of a relationship that is clearly complicated.

The title track brings those ideas together. “FALLEN ANGEL” is subdued rather than explosive, while its music video goes much bigger visually, using wings, water and other fantasy imagery around JENNIE’s central character.

The contrast is notable for an artist whose solo work has often moved easily between fashion spectacle, hip-hop swagger and high-gloss pop.

Some fans had already heard what was coming

Fallen Angel did not arrive entirely without warning.

JENNIE introduced several songs during her 2026 festival run, allowing new material to circulate through live performances before the EP was formally announced. Even “Less than a Lover” was performed before its official July release.

That rollout reflects a different stage in her solo career.

She no longer has to use every release to prove that an audience exists outside BLACKPINK. Ruby placed 10 songs simultaneously on the Billboard Philippines Hot 100 after its release, including “like JENNIE” in the Top 10.

Her collaboration with Tame Impala also pushed her further into the U.S. mainstream this year. Their “Dracula” remix reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July.

Against those bigger commercial moments, Fallen Angel feels less concerned with making another introduction.

There are actually two versions of the EP

The digital release is not the complete Fallen Angel tracklist.

Its physical edition expands the project from three songs to six, adding “sweettooth,” “lockitdown” and “Face” as CD-exclusive tracks.

That creates an unusual split. Streaming listeners get a brief snapshot of this period in JENNIE’s music, while physical-album buyers will eventually hear a considerably larger version.

Whether those additional songs change the character of the project remains to be heard.

For now, the three-track edition works less like another major album campaign and more like a bridge between chapters.

Ruby had something to prove. Fallen Angel sounds like JENNIE no longer feels the need to prove everything at once.
