James Arthur is turning a lesson in letting go into something meant to be sung at full volume.
After months on the road and repeated requests from fans who first heard the song during his live shows, the British singer-songwriter has officially released “Waste My Tears,” a soaring new single built around self-worth, acceptance and the decision to stop spending emotional energy on things that no longer deserve it.
The track arrives after a major touring run for Arthur, including his first sold-out European arena headline tour and a sold-out UK and Ireland arena tour. Among the biggest stops were two nights at The O2 in London, where he performed before a combined 40,000 fans. “Waste My Tears” had already begun taking on a life of its own during selected shows, where its surprise inclusion prompted listeners to flood Arthur’s social media pages asking for an official release.
That live history feels particularly suited to the song.
Rather than treating vulnerability as something quiet or defeated, “Waste My Tears” pushes it toward anthem territory. Arthur’s characteristically rough-edged vocal sits against an expansive production, while gospel backing vocals give the chorus an added sense of scale. Beneath that big sound, however, is a straightforward idea: knowing when something—or someone—is no longer worth losing yourself over.
“This song is about knowing your worth, letting go of the things that don’t deserve your energy, and moving forward without looking back,” Arthur said.
He points in particular to one lyric that distills the song’s message: “Don’t stop being anything but yourself.”
For Arthur, the hope is that listeners can find something of their own in that sentiment. “I hope that means something to you too,” he added.
A New Chapter After ‘PISCES’
“Waste My Tears” also marks Arthur’s first new solo release since last year’s PISCES, extending a recording career that has remained remarkably consistent on the UK charts.
All six of his studio albums have reached No. 3 or higher in the UK, with Back From The Edge and Bittersweet Love both reaching No. 1. His singles catalog has produced two UK No. 1 hits and another five Top 10 entries. In 2023, that body of work earned him a BRITs Billion Award after surpassing one billion UK streams.
His catalog has also accumulated 12 Platinum-certified singles in the UK, including “Impossible,” “Naked,” “Train Wreck,” “Car’s Outside” and the career-defining “Say You Won’t Let Go.” According to the release, Arthur has now generated 20 billion career streams and 52 million physical sales worldwide, alongside Diamond, Platinum and Gold certifications across multiple international markets.
Yet “Waste My Tears” is less interesting as another number on that résumé than as a reminder of what has kept Arthur’s music resonating: he has repeatedly returned to emotions that are intensely personal but immediately recognizable.
This time, the heartbreak isn’t necessarily the destination.
The song instead focuses on what happens afterward—the point when hurt gives way to clarity, when holding on stops feeling noble, and when walking away becomes an act of self-respect.
For anyone who has ever had to decide where their emotional energy belongs, Arthur has condensed the answer into a song designed for arenas: some things simply aren’t worth your tears.
