From Diplomacy To The Public: Coconut Palace Prepares For Its Grand Reopening

Along the shores of Pasay City, an architectural marvel born from the humble coconut palm is preparing to step back into the spotlight. The historic Coconut Palace, a celebrated symbol of sustainable design and local craftsmanship, will open its doors to the public following its role as a key venue for the 49th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit this November.

Commissioned in 1978 and brought to life by National Artist for Architecture Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa, the landmark remains a testament to the “tree of life.” From coconut-lumber pillars and intricate inlaid shell patterns to woven husk fiber accents, the structure stands as a masterpiece of tropical ingenuity.

Owned by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), the newly restored estate is set to welcome everyday visitors once its summit hosting duties conclude. While the GSIS Board of Trustees is currently reviewing final access guidelines, the agency envisions a hybrid setup: general entry to allow the public to admire its grand interiors paired with dedicated rental options for private bookings and events.

“The vision of GSIS for the Coconut Palace is, after the ASEAN, to be able to open it to the public so that the public will be able to enjoy the grandeur, the artistry, of the excellence of Filipino ingenuity,” said GSIS Acting Executive Vice President Atty. Joseph Phillip Andres.

As world leaders gather under its iconic roof later this year, the landmark bridges past and present, first impressing foreign dignitaries, then returning to the Filipino people as an accessible celebration of cultural heritage.
