The Philippine women’s national football team secured its return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 2–0 victory over Uzbekistan in the playoff round of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
The Filipinas leaned on a strong blend of youth and experience, with Angie Beard and Jackie Sawicki scoring in the second half, both off assists from rising winger Jael Guy.
After a tightly contested first half, the breakthrough came in the 47th minute when Guy delivered a precise cross that Beard converted with a left-footed strike to open the scoring.
Five minutes later, Guy again created the opportunity, beating defenders on the wing before sending in another cross that Sawicki finished with a header to double the lead.
Head coach Mark Torcaso highlighted the impact of the young winger.
“I told her before the game that this was her time to shine, and she delivered,” Torcaso said, noting Guy’s two key assists in the second half.
Beard, who is primarily known as a defender, credited the team’s halftime adjustments for her goal.
“We got into halftime and Mark told me to score… Jael put in these fantastic balls tonight,” she said.
Sawicki, meanwhile, emphasized patience and execution in the final third.
“We just needed to be patient and more clinical… I knew if we kept going, we’d find those spaces,” she said.
Guy, named Player of the Match, said the moment was special but pointed to the team effort behind the win.
“It really takes a village… Everyone—from the defense to the bench—played a role,” she said.
John Anthony Gutierrez of the Philippine Football Federation said the performance reflects the team’s evolving identity.
“Together, they represent the strength of a Filipinas team that continues to grow, evolve, and deliver when it matters most,” he said.
With the win, the Filipinas book their place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, marking another milestone for Philippine football on the global stage.
